PASTOR’S PONDERINGS

It’s rare that we hear someone excited for the month of February. In our area, it’s often the coldest and grayest of the winter months. Many would probably skip over it if given a choice. Even on the calendar, it’s the shortest month of the year. And yet, we must go through it.

There are seasons in life that we cannot avoid. Some are long and some just seem long—like February. We have an overwhelming desire to snuggle up in our blankets with a warm beverage trying to hibernate until this season passes.

What would it look like if we really examined it? Perhaps we’d find moments for stillness and contemplation. Perhaps we’d find moments to consider our need for quiet. In this cave of hibernation, we’d have an opportunity to receive God’s love and consider how we might share it with others.

The church season of Lent begins on February 14. During the six weeks that follow, we remember the love of Jesus—his journey to the cross and ultimately, his resurrection from the grave. It’s a time to reflect on making changes that shape us to be more like Jesus.

Instead of thinking of February or Lent as giving up personal comfort, consider it a time to share comfort with others who need it, too.  Reach out with a call, a text, a card, or a visit— “just because”. Your small acts of love will remind them, and you, that gray days don’t last forever.  And that love is always in season.
